Novak Djokovic trounce John Isner in opening rubber – Davis Cup 2013
Novak Djokovic outclassed the former Top 10, John Isner, in straight sets at the quarter-finals of Davis Cup 2013. He recorded a 7-6(5), 6-2, 7-5 victory against the American to give his nation one point lead at this indoor hard court event. However, Victor
Troicki bowed out to Sam Querrey in the second rubber and levelled the scores by 1-1.
The Serbian top ranked star, Djokovic warded off early resistance to overpower Isner in their fourth meeting at this two hour marathon. As a result, the Serb not only avenged his loss at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells last season but also improved
to a 3-1 lifetime in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series against the 25-year-old.
The 25-year-old stated in a post match press conference:
“To start with a win is a huge advantage. We've been practising the past six or seven days in these conditions, as this is the highest altitude we've ever played in and it plays an important role. I played a very good match. I stayed composed and patient,
waiting for my chances. I returned well when I needed to and served consistently at a high level.”
In the opening set, both stars played brilliant tennis. However, Djokovic showed his class in the tie-breaker and eventually clinched the opener with a 7-6(5) score line.
The Serbian number one kept momentum rolling in the proceeding set. He dominated throughout the battle and eventually clicked the set with a 6-2 win.
Djokovic’s skills were fully polished in the final set. He capitalised on his break chance in the end and eventually bagged the decider by winning seven games to five.
Overall, the Serbian star converted all four break opportunities to his advantage. He also withstood 17 aces and stayed focused throughout the battle.
In the second rubber, both players showed awe-inspiring skills in a five-set thriller. However, Serbia’s Troicki suffered a 6-7(1), 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 4-6 loss against Querrey.
As a result, Querrey levelled his nation’s score by 1-1 against Serbia.
In the reverse singles, Djokovic will take on Sam Querrey while Troicki will square off against Isner.
