Novak Djokovic vaporizes Lukasz Kubot in round of 16 – Davidoff Swiss Indoors 2011
Top seeded Serb Novak Djokovic crushed Lukasz Kubot of Poland with a breadstick at the Davidoff Swiss Indoors 2011, an ATP World Tour 500 series event taking place at St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland. He registered a 6-1,
6-2 score line over the Boleslawiec native to advance into the quarter-finals on Thursday.
World number one Djokovic took fifty-five minutes to outclass the Pole, ranked fifty eight spots below him, on their fourth meeting. The Serb crushed Kubot in Italy earlier this season and after earning this success, he extended
lead in their head-to-heads series by 4-0.
The 2009 titlist Djokovic stormed into the opening set and wiped out first three games in a row before the Pole could hold on. He maintained his form and bagged in last three games as well to earn a breadstick. The Serb faced zero
breakpoint and cashed in half of the four breakpoint opportunities to his advantage.
24-year-old Serb stayed on savage mode in the second set as he went on a four games killing spree before Kubot could come on the score sheet. Later, he swiped in remaining serves to seal the set with a 6-2 victory. Djokovic again
faced zero breakpoint and converted two out of three breakpoint opportunities to his advantage.
On the whole, the high flying Serb fired eight aces from his arsenal of skills and clobbered a higher first serve share of 63 percent as compared to the Pole’s 53 percent. He also registered a brilliant 81 percent win on it and
capitalised on the several unforced errors Kubot spilled.
"It’s great to play well again," said the blissful Serb who triumphed over Belgian Xavier Malisse on Tuesday on his first match since lower back injury. "I think I did play well at the start of the first match, and then I had big
ups and down throughout the match. I had a lot of unforced errors and double faults at important moments, but it was kind of expected because it was the first match after six weeks after a big injury - probably the biggest in my career. Today is another story.
I felt good on the court and I’m happy to go through."
Up next for the Serb – who won ten tour level titles this season, is the Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis who rallied past a local qualifier Michael Lammer in brutal three sets.
26-year-old Cypriot dusted away all four breakpoints came across and converted one out of five breakpoint opportunities to his advantage to clinch the match with a 7-6(2), 6-7(2), 6-3 victory.
