Novak Djokovic will lead the field at 2011 US Open – Tennis News
Known as ‘Mr. Invincible’ these days, the world number one, Novak Djokovic of Serbia, will be seeded at number one in the US Open draws.
Clinching the top spot in ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Rankings last month after winning the Wimbledon Championships, Djokovic is going to lead the field as the top seed for the first time in his career. The
Serb is currently Australian Open and Wimbledon champion and will enter the last Grand Slam tournament of the running year as the hot favourite.
The mega event will start on 29th of August at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows Park, of Queens, New York City, United States, with a pack of 32 seeded players that almost matches
the ATP’s latest world rankings.
“For 2011, the US Open followed the ATP World Tour rankings to determine the men’s singles seeds. This is the tenth consecutive year that the US Open has seeded 32 players in both singles events,” a USTA press release read.
24-year-old Djokovic is in his best form ever, with a 57-2 winning record in the current ATP season, bagging a total of nine singles title. He has already bagged five Masters Series title this year and two Grand Slam crowns to
become the most successful player of the season.
The Serb already has three Grand Slam titles to his name though he is yet to have his hands on the Roland Garros title and the US Open title. Djokovic made it to the final in New York last year to face the top seed, Rafael Nadal
of Spain, but lost 4–6, 7–5, 4–6, 2–6 to the determined Spaniard to remain fruitless on the American soil. Prior to his last year’s defeat at US Open, Djokovic was also the finalist in the 2007 edition as well, losing to the Swiss maestro, Roger Federer, in
straight sets.
With a ballistic form, Djokovic is anticipated to bag the US Open title this time round but his physical fitness is a source of concern for the tennis fans. The Serb got his shoulder injured in the title clash against the world
number four, Andy Murray of Great Britain, in the final of Cincinnati Masters last Sunday. Djokovic was forced to retire from the contest after dropping the opening set to let Murray take the Master Series championship. It is hoped that the world number one
will be in his true shape in a couple of days and will be in his full flow at the US Open next week.
