Novak Djokovic will lock horns with Andy Murray at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals – Tennis News
World number one, Novak Djokovic, will take on third seeded Andy Murray from Great Britain in second round robin match at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals on Wednesday. The Serb toppled seventh seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in straight sets while Murray required
three sets to outlast Czech Republic’s Tomas Berdych at this season-ending tournament taking place in London, England.
Both tennis super stars will renew their rivalry after playing for the seventh time this circuit. The Scot recently captured his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open after overpowering Djokovic. The Belgrade native on the other hand took his revenge at
the Shanghai Rolex Masters where he triumphed over Murray in the title-round.
Djokovic currently leads the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head Series by 9-7 against his fellow 25-year-old. In their last encounter in Shanghai, Murray sought a match point in the second set at 5-4. The Scot failed to capitalise
on it but dragged the set to a tie-breaker where he sought few more championship points. However, Murray squandered them all and eventually bowed out to second seeded Novak Djokovic in gruelling three sets.
Seeded top in this event, Djokovic required 100 minutes to outmuscle the French number one with a 7-6(4), 6-3 score line. He blocked all three breakpoints he came across and cashed two out of three break chances to steal the show. The Serb clobbered a slightly
higher first serve share of 65 per cent and superbly marked 43 out of 66 points on it.
Djokovic commented about his match against the British number one in a press conference:
"My next match [on Wednesday], against Andy, is always a big challenge. He had the lots of success in London, playing in his town, in front of his crowd. We know a lot about each other. I'm sure that we're going to come up with some really good tennis."
The Olympic gold medallist, Murray on the other hand made a drastic entry at The O2 Arena. He lost his serve once and eventually gifted away the opener against his opening round robin match against the fifth seeded Czech. However, the Scot unveiled his true
colours after that and consequently carved out a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 success.
Murray jubilantly stated in a courtside interview after clicking his first match:
“The noise and the atmosphere at the beginning of the match was great. I thought I started the match well. I just didn't quite take my chances early on. Both of us I thought served pretty well [and] weren't losing too many points on our first serve.”
The reigning Australian Open champion, Djokovic may have the advantage of recording the most recent win against the Dunblane native. However, Murray is backed by his home crowd and with his recent victory at Flushing Meadows, he is in spectacular run of
form. The Scot is expected to formulate a 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-4 victory against Djokovic.
