Novak Djokovic will meet Bernard Tomic in the second round of the Roger’s Cup – Tennis News
World number two, Novak Djokovic will be competing against Australian underdog Bernard Tomic for the first time on the hard-court of Toronto for the Rogers Cup. The top seeded Serb could not defend his bronze medal at this
year’s Olympics and is slightly confused regarding his title in the up-coming tournament after receiving a bye in the first round.
Djokovic received a straight sets upset, 5-7, 5-7, at the hands of British number one, Andy Murray in the Olympics semi-final. Many critics believe that former world champion’s performance has considerably declined this year.
Hence, he might face difficulty in competing on the hard courts at the Rogers Cup.
Previously, Tomic defeated Germany’s Michael Berrer by 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the first round of the Rogers Cup. The Aussie number one is all set to face a tough competition at the hands of top seed, Djokovic, in the second round
later this week.
For the Serb number one, defeating Tomic should not be that big of a deal. They have encountered each other three times in the past. Djokovic takes a lead of 2-1 against him due to his proactive game play. The Serbian tennis
ace is gearing up for his Montreal campaign in order to gain his lost glory. Despite of his tireless efforts it is hard to maintain speed on the hard courts.
In a press conference, the 25-year old informed the media, “the transition from grass court to hard court is going to be very difficult because we have very little time, only a few days. However, we were aware of that fact
at the start of the season. Now we will try to do it in the most efficient, best possible way. How it is going to go, I am not sure. I cannot predict anything else in my opening match. It will obviously take a little bit of time to do that.”
Tomic is the only teenager playing in the ATP rankings and Djokovic commented about him: “He has a lot of variety, a lot of talent in his game. He comes up with some shots that are really unexpected, so he can be very dangerous."
Nevertheless, the match is indeed one of the most interesting tie-ups of the tournament. With the absence of the reigning champions like Federer and Nadal, the Serbian tennis professionals can utilize this tournament to as
a fair chance to regain the top spot in the ATP rankings.
