Novak Djokovic will meet Richard Gasquet in the final – Rogers Cup 2012
Top seed, Novak Djokovic will be competing against the 14th seeded Frenchman, Richard Gasquet, in the final of the Rogers Cup, in Toronto, Canada. Both contenders contested a fierce battle throughout
the tournament and will be meeting each other in the Rexall Courts on Sunday, afternoon.
Previously, the Serbian tennis ace, defeated his fellow compatriot, Janko Tipsarevic, in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1, in the semi-final match earlier this week. This title will surely cater for his loss at the London Olympics
as he returned home empty handed. However, he does not desire to replace the reigning world number one, Roger Federer.
In an interview, Djokovic said, "We wanted to play and finish the match tonight. Number one is of course a motivation for me, I cannot lie. I want it again. But Roger deserves it right now; he won Wimbledon and is playing
well. We are making each other great player."
Ranked 21st in the ATP World Tour rankings, Gasquet maintains an excellent winning record this season. He is the double bronze medallist and now hopes to secure the Masters Series event in Toronto.
Gasquet gave the eighth seeded, John Isner, a straight sets upset in the semi-finals by 7-6(3), 6-3. His single-handed backhand shots are one of the best in the men’s game.
In a press conference after the match, French said, “The key of the match was to return well, and I did it. I had to do a big tiebreak, and I did it. I played incredible in the tiebreak and then I felt well.”
Gasquet took off a superb start in the opening set and penned down his win of a 6-4 score against Isner and ultimately claiming the lead in the match. He is passionate to clinch his first ever title at the Toronto Masters
against the defending champion, Djokovic.
The Serb’s performance has considerably improved during the event and he claims to be the favourite contender for the title, after the withdrawal of the leading tennis champions. The final at the Rexall Courts will indeed
prove to be one of the most entertaining encounters of the tournament.
