Novak Djokovic wipes out Adrian Ungur in the second round of the Serbia Open
World number two, Novak Djokovic’s blistering run in the current year continued as he goes to 25-0 after defeating the Romanian qualifier, Adrian Ungur in the second round of the Serbia Open at Belgrade, Serbia on Wednesday afternoon.
The home favourite blew away Ungur in straight sets 6-2, 6-3, in just one hour and eight minutes to reach the quarter-final of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 tournament.
The top seed Serb registered his first clay-court win of the running ATP season at the Tennis Center Novak complex, extending his unbeaten run to 25 matches. Djokovic returned to action since capturing the Miami Masters title and
had an assertive victory in front of his home crowd. The world number two rarely faced a challenge from the Romanian and simply outclassed him in both sets to make it to the round of eight at Belgrade.
23-year-old Djokovic is enjoying his best start to a season and has already won four championship titles, including the all prestigious Grand Slam, the Australian Open. He received a bye to the second round of the Serbia Open and
exhibited his magnificent class in front of his home crowd to dispense out Ungur from the tournament. Djokovic dropped his serve twice in the contest but had no trouble in overcoming his opponent in the game.
“It’s tough to play on clay after almost a year,” reflected Djokovic after winning the matchup, “It will take a bit to get used to it.”
The Serbian serve was not up to the mark but was good enough to beat the bleak Romanian. Djokovic had an explosive start to the game, reeling off the opening three games to lead 3-0. His mighty forehand worked to perfection and
his powerful ground strokes were well applauded by the local crowd. Ungur made his moves immediately and stung a serve break to cut the deficit to 2-3 but his strong opponent quickly regained the control of the game. Djokovic clinched three straight games
to stun Ungur and closed the opener at 6-2.
The following set initiated in the similar way as the first one did, with Djokovic racing through the opening three games to reach 3-0. Ungur made a break through to make the scores 2-3, as he did in the opener. Djokovic clouted
his fifth serve break of the contest at 4-2 and then served out of the set convincingly to close the contest at 6-3.
Up next for Djokovic is the Russian, Blaz Kavcic, who defeated Ricardo Mello of Brazil in the second round to reach the quarter-finals of the Serbia Open.
