Novellist unmatchable in King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes – Horseracing news
Novellist delivered a thumping performance in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (sponsored by Betfair) (Group 1) at Ascot in England on Saturday, July 27, 2013.
The young challenger was not given the best odds for victory, but he was rated quite highly by the bookmakers. A lot of punters gambled money in his favour, which clearly showed that no one was taking him lightly.
However, everyone was expecting a close competition, as there were some quality stallions lined up for action at Ascot. This was not the case though, as the race turned out to be a one-sided affair because of the superb run from Novellist.
The four-year-old colt was quick out of the blocks and gained momentum towards the middle section of the track. He was pretty much in control of the things, entering the final few furlongs, but some of his rivals were trying to reduce the gap to him.
No one managed to do that in the end, as the winning stallion was extremely quick in the final moments of the race and ended up winning by a clear margin of five lengths. This was his third consecutive victory of the current season, which delighted his fans and the entire members of the team.
Victorious jockey Johnny Murtagh claimed, “He's a high-class horse and has a good engine. I love the way that when I asked him he really stretched, he really got down and wanted it. I can't thank the owner enough, I was their third choice but I was probably worth waiting for.”
On the other hand, winning trainer Andreas Wohler said, “The statistics wouldn't have said there would be two German winners but when we have good horses they are good. It's the first big comparison between the best older horses and three-year-olds and he's beaten the best three-year-olds. He will have one race beforehand and the Arc is the main target in the autumn.”
This was overall the eighth victory for Novellist out of 10 races. He has got a wonderful strike rate and his camp would love to see him winning races with consistency in the future.
