  1. Transitions are the period between activities from the conclusion of one activity to the start of another. Children transition from group time to snack. Or they go from outdoor play to indoor rug time.

This time is often tricky because  there are many ways to get from point A to point B. Children can take off in different directions. Adults often think this is a good time to chat or take a bathroom break.

Novelty transitions are activities designed to focus the group on making the transition in a specific way.

Singing a song about going from outside in or chanting directions like:

"Everybody stand up stand up stand up.

Everybody stretch  and stretch and stretch.

Everybody march, and march, and march.

Everybody find a chair, find a chair, find a chair.

Everybody sit down, sit down sit down.

And fold your hands in your lap."

Or choose one person at a time to move to the rug like an animal and the rest of the group will guess what animal they are.

I used to have students pick a color out of a hat one at a time and go to the chair of the same color.
