Novi Sad Masters get the green light in Serbia – Volleyball News
Third edition of the CEV European Beach Volleyball Championship took centre stage in Novi Sad, Serbia on Wednesday, July 4.
This is the second year in a row that the European Volleyball Federation (CEV) selected Strand Beach in Novi Sad for the cracking volleyball action. The Novi Sad Masters feature only men’s matches. The tournament is scheduled to complete its length on Sunday, July 8.
The tournament started with the Country Quota Playoffs and three duos from Austria came into stride. One team got lucky and managed to clinch the qualifying berth, while the rest tandems got disqualified.
In the first CQ affair, the pairing of Peter Eglseer and Felix Koraimann earned a bye as the opposite team could not make it to the competition. However, Eglseer- Koraimann had a tough competition with compatriots Tobias Koraimann/Florian Schnetzer in the second fixture of the day. In fact, it was the first practical match, which put both teams to a test of skills.
The match lasted for three sets, while the former duo settled for 2-1 victory. Eglseer and Koraimann had a good chemistry between them. They made a very good combination and perfectly complimented each other during the match. They got off to a good start and secured opening set with four points, 21-17. Koraimann-Schnetzer hit back in the following set and put up a convincing effort. They successfully managed to break through the defence line of rivals, Eglseer-Koraimann, and downed them with identical score of 21-17.
In the tie-breaker third set, the two teams remained closed from start to end. Suspense and anxiety of fans was sky-rocketing as everyone waited for the match results. Finally, Eglseer-Koraimann hit the mark and claimed decisive final set with small margin of two points (15-13).
Eglseer-Koraimann bagged first win of the day and followed it up with another victory in third fixture of the day. The edged out Thomas Kunert/Lorenz Petutschnig in three sets (13-21, 23-21, 15-12) and booked a slot in the next stage of the tournament.
After the completion of Country Quota Playoffs, the Novi Sad Masters is supposed to enter the qualifying stage. Thereafter, the successful teams will advance to the 32-team Main Draw. Some of the high-ranked teams are already confirmed for the Main Draw and they will join the competition on Friday. The final day of the tournament will feature the most important medal matches and the top team of the competition will capture the spotlight.
