  1. This Hotel is on Lauriston Place, its a good one compared to many other Novotels, with good rooms and a nice pool. Just West of the Grassmarket, a good spot overall, excellent for tourists with access to the Castle and Old Town, but a decent walk from any of the main shopping centres, which lie on the other side of the hill that the Castle is on from the Novotel.

If your main concern is location (to shops) rather than price then there are many  much better located: The Royal British, The Old Waverley, and five star Balmoral are both on Princes St, The five star Caledonian (Hilton) is just off one end and the Howard is a boutique Hotel right in the thick of the shops.  And there are others too.

Someone must be getting mixed up with somewhere else as the Novotel is a considerable walk (taxi or bus really with luggage) from the Edinburgh or Haymarket Railway Stations, and certainly a multiple of '300 yards'.

  2. I stayed at this hotel, several years ago before the remodel. The location is fantastic, within walking distance to everything, and the train is about 300 yards away from the hotel. Go out the back and up some stairs and make a right and you can walk to the castle.

Another good property too is the Ibis hotel city center.

Have to go on one of those haunted night tours !

  3. To me Its 3*, its comfortable, relatively clean. absolutely nothing posh about it. food is ok but not above average.

All middle of the road stuff same as the travel lodges
