Putting on a great Olympics sure doesn't make it the top 'power' in the world; whether it be sports, economics, human rights etc.    From where I sit, way down here in New Zealand, China still has a helluva lot to learn from the rest of the world before it becomes the #1 powerhouse of the world; respected powerhouse.     Just remember that given the record of human rights in China there is probably a history of misery in the stories behind 'some' of their Olympic participants.     As for an economic giant; maybe by 2050 if their pollution hasn't taken a huge toll.

Chine as in mainland PR-China?

No, economic and military wise, PR-China is still decades behind the US. At their current economic growth rate, they still require around 20 more years to reach the same GDP/economic power of the United States.

They need another 60-70 years or more to reach the same GDP per capita of the US.

Mainland China is becoming wealthier and more influential, but they still have a long way to go.

No we still have a long way to go before that happens. China is doing great granted, but just because they are during great this yer does not mean they will doing this evey year.

A big country in Asia with 5000 yrs history and lots of creations as shown at the Opening Ceremony  of the Olympics in Beijing.  It is the first time in history in this modern age that China is fully open to the world.  Last time was during Marco Polo's time in China ( Ancient).

The world is round and all will take their turn to turn around.....and what you need is TIME.  It is about time to change from West to East, very soon.  Do you agree?  Give another question in better English & if not sure, check the dictionary, OK.

A couple of gold medals doesn't determine a countries power and wealth.

Give China some 60-80 years and It could reach the GPD that the USA has today.

Even if the USA will be 2nd or last in the future, nothing will take away the greatness and difference America has.
