it's the 3rd night and it seems like by tomorrow morming he's not gonna be alive, he's so weak. i bought pedialyte and have been giving him water and gatorade (the vet said it had electrolytes which is good for him) since he doesn't want to eat anymore. i'm gonna take care of him through the night. i think he has parvo and he vomited 6 times today. i can't hospitalize him cuz it's too expensive. is there a slight chance he'll make it? btw he's a 3 month old pit bull

  1. If it is parvo, which it sound like it.  He probably is to far along and he will pass away.  I would go ahead and take him to the vet, if your Vet is willing you can set up a payment plan.  Give the little guy a chance, (I'm not being smart) but work a few extra hours at work if possible to make the payments, clear out your change, or sell a few things on eBay.  Where there is will , there's a way.

  2. My puppy (lab/pit mix) just survived Parvo last months at 12 wks old. If you can afford antibiotics and ant-nausea meds (GET IT FROM THE VET NOT OVER THE COUNTER) and keep your pup hydrated there's a chance of survival. Without the antibiotics, I'm sorry to say the pup probably won't survive. All the vomiting causes dehydration which can cause organs to slow or shut down. That then causes bacterial infections. It's the infections and dehydration that kill Parvo infected dogs, not the virus itself. We spent $300 to save Zoie but we had electrolyte bubbles put under her skin as well. Call your vet and ask if you can just get antibiotics for a week and anti-nausea for 4 days. That's what we were given to take home. We couldn't afford to keep her there at over $700. Once home, we gave her chicken broth. Since she wasn't drinking enough water on her own we tried different things. We ALWAYS called the vet first to ask before giving her anything. We tried jello, sugar waster, pedialyte (diluted).... then finally the chicken broth. The broth worked the best. Our dog was soo hungry but you're not supposed to feed them for at LEAST the first 5 days. Add a little water to the broth. Not to dilute it but to increase the water intake. Don't let the pup drink too much at once though. It will upset the stomach. Give the pup a few licks every 15-30 min at first. You can gradually increase the amount but don't give more than 1/4 cup at a time. As the puppy rehydrates you can spread out the time a little.

After the antibiotics, anti-nausea, and rehydration your pup is going to be starving. Slowly introduce your pup to food. I continued to give her broth mixed with water for about a week. I gradually added a little dry puppy food to the broth. Each day I gave her a little more than the day before.

Today Zoie is back to her old self and has put back on ALL the weight she lost PLUS. She's actually more affectionate now. It's like she knows she almost died and we saved her.

Make sure you comfort your pup. Lay on the floor, talk 2 him, tell him you love him, pet him.... just let him know you're there to give him strength. Pet him in light and easy circular motions, this is very relaxing and comforting to dogs. I hope your pup makes it, but if he doesn't..... at least he will pass feeling loved n not all alone in a corner.

Good luck! Please keep us updated if you can.

  3. You doing a wonderfull thing by spending the night with your little pooch. DONT give up on him!!! You never no he just might make it, keep on watching over him, and hopefully he survive.

  4. your only hope is to get him to the vet. he is very young and will need iv fluids. if it is parvo it is best to put him to sleep to keep him from suffering but don't assume that is what he has, it could be alot of things. Again, get to the vet now!

  5. iMOM and carecredit are both organizations that can give you low interest loans with minimal payment every month.

For everyone who's ripping on her for affording stuff, have you asked her what her situation was?  Stuff comes up, money gets tight.  Maybe when she got him she could afford it but something incredible happened and she cannot anymore.

  6. If he's vomiting and not keeping fluids down you need to take him to the vet to make sure he stays hydrated. Dehydration can make him very weak and make it very hard for him to recover from whatever he's sick with. If you can't hospitalize him and do IV fluids talk to the doctor about sub-cutaneous fluids. They can show you how to do them at home and provide you with the fluids and needles. This means putting sterile fluids that (depending on what type they use) may have electrolytes underneath the skin so that his body slowly absorbs them.

If it is confirmed to be parvo and he's worsening then you may need to put him to sleep because he can get so sick he'll just suffer until he finally dies. Consider doing a parvo test at the vet, at least then you'll know what you're dealing with. I'm sorry you're going through this, it's really hard to see young animals this ill.

  7. Before buying a dog you should have allowed for these situations and had money put aside. The vet being expensive isnt a good excuse not to go.

Like every other person who is going to reply to this - take him to the vet now, either to put him out of his suffering, or get him fixed. He wont survive otherwise.

  8. Not to sound rude but!  If you could't afford to take care of a pet why did you get one?

By not giving him the medical treatment that he needs you are guilty of Animal neglect and abuse.  If this were a child you would find a way to get help.  Your pet is no different!  They depend on us for everything, their health care, proper feeding, Grooming and everything that they need.

Do this poor puppy a favor, either Get the help or surrender it to someone who can, before it's to late.  It will die without proper care.

  9. My heart goes out to you.  Outsidee of what you have already done, except for hospitalizing him.  You could also try to bottle feed him some baby cereal - the rice is best.  Just continue to keep him comfortable and loved.  Let us all know what the outcome is.  Good Luck!!

  10. No one owns a dog if they have no intention of attending to its needs.

Stop going out, stop with the takeaways, stop alcohol or smokes, you do whatever it takes to make sure you DO have the money to pay for their care. To not do this is irresponsibility.

I am on a pension and can ill afford it either, but I do it because both of my dogs (17 months old) need their shots every 12 months, desexing at 6 months and whatever else in the future to keep them fit and healthy.

Take your dog to the Vet before its too late, and lay it on the line with the Vet stating you have minimal money, and you will PAY him off regularly weekly/fortnightly.

according to that link, using pedialyte seems just fine. and to keep your dog hydrated, using pedialyte would work as well if your dog doesn't want to drink anymore. but drinking would be best, since he doesn't want to eat. i'm real sorry about your dog by the way, i really do hope he makes it. best of luck.

  12. By not taking your dog to the vet when you know it needs vet care you are commiting a crime.

Have you even bothered to call a vet  and see if they have payment plans.  Please surrender your animal to a shelter or animal control, if your going to be an irresponsible pet owner.

If you cant afford vet care then you have to do the right thing, which is signing it over to animal control, not just letting it die an agonizing death.   Good luck

  13. Well, I guess all you can do is hold him while he dies in your arms then if you can't afford the vet. Lesson learned, DO NOT buy any more pets. If you cannot take them to the vet and keep them from suffering, you shouldn't own pets.

  14. This is why so many people don't deserve to have pets. Or kids, for that matter.

Never drive a car that you can't afford to crash.

  15. First I'm sorry for the long answer but I have a dog who I've dealt with illness alot!!

Does your dog have diahrea?  How long has it gone without food? Have you taken him to the vet?  Has parvo actually been diaganosed?

My dog has been sick countless times and she has had vomiting and diahrea. I know vets are expensive but there are ususally alternatives to hospitalization if you cannot afford it.  First before you decide its parvo i would at the very least have your puppy checked for parvo.  It could simply be stomach upset or mine has had pancretits 3 times. She is very sensative  and has been on prescription food for more than 5 years due to her digestive sensitivity.  If the vet said your dog needs fluids then ask if you can have subcutenous fluids injected.  I have had to do this for mine several times during a bout of vomiting/diahrea.  This is a much less expensive way to go, it doesnt work as quickly but it is effective and lasts over a period of 8-12 hours in my expierence depending on the dehyrdration level.  In addition to this I was told to use caution with water if the dog is still vomiting, if you give too much water it could cause more vomiting leading to more dehydration.  Consider ice chips if he is still vomiting.  I was told to wait about 2 hours after a vomiting episode before giving water in the liquid form.

For eating,  if he is really sick and has an upset stomach he may just not want to eat because his tummy hurts.  Once when my dog had pancretitis she went 3 days without eating so the emergeny vet told me to mix her dry food in water until it gets "spongy" then mash it with a fork or blend it.  Put the soupy mixture in the microwave just long enough to get warm, this causes the food to let off more off a smell and make them more likely to eat.  This worked wonders in my situation.  But again be careful because if he is still vomiting then you may just make it worse if you feed him too soon.

Hope this helps and good luck

  16. Beg, borrow or steal. Find a way to get him to the vet. I don't know your story so I am not going to judge you but  do sound like a good person. Can you take him to a shelter? Maybe they can help.
