  1. There are 83,000+ DVDs and less than 600 Blu-ray discs. Less than 80 new movies are expected to be released on Blu-ray in the next 4 months, while over 600 DVDs are scheduled for the same period ... so, not all new movies will be released on Blu-ray from now on (Partly because potential sales don't justify it, but also because the mastering process is too slow and expensive, and replication is undercapacity).

There are over 200 million DVD players in the US alone ... and something like 10 million devices capable of playing Blu-ray disks (and most of these are game machines not used to play movies). While about 40% of US households have an HDTV less than half of these (~20%, this is the potential market for Blu-ray players) have HD programming.

Blu-ray is a premium priced alternative to DVD and, other than a prettier picture and (potentially) better sound, offers no compelling advantage over DVD (relative to how DVD solved the problems of VHS).

Until prices come down on players, hardware matures and disk prices fall to DVD levels, Blu-ray has no chance of going mainstream. DVDs currently account for 90%-97% of disk sales (depending on movie) ... so, bottom line, the predominence of DVD is not even threatened yet.

  2. Its true is going to be a long time before that happens.

Seriously though, DVDs are still a very popular thing. Unless every single title ever known to man kind is available on Blu-ray (which would take too long), Blu-Rays went down to a price everyone would want to pay, and you could record your home movies and etc from video onto Blu-Ray and etc....then DVD would be extinct.

there are many uses, technologies and people that depend on regular DVD's so there are still a huge  market and long years for DVD's.

take in considerations VHS that for me is dead and you can still find vhs cassettes on the stores not many but you can find it.

  3. No it will be some time if ever that Blu-Ray surpasses DVD sales. Take into account that VHS still has a market share.

  4. Blu-Ray is meant as an alternative for high end viewing and NOT a replacement for DVD anytime soon.  It could be 10 years if ever before DVD goes away completely.
