Now that his No. 1 ranking is all but gone, where does Federer go from here?

Federer lost to Karlovic 6-7, 6-4, 6-7, in the 3rd round at Cincy. He played great, but made a couple of mistakes that cost him the match. Karlovic was brilliant on serving, and he wasn't intimidated at all by Federer. Credit Karlovic for hanging in there. Big win for the Croat.

  1. He can take Borg's way out and retire at year's end, but even Borg won a Slam in his last year, so if Federer wins at U.. Open he might retire at #2.

OR, he could do what Agassi did and start from scratch, maybe even take a year off.

Agassi came back at 29 and actually won more Slams than he did prior.

I personally think he'll try to come back next year, especially if he manages to win the U.S. Open he'll do his best to try and beat Sampras' mark and if he somehow does ( AUS and WIMB maybe ) he'll almost certainly retire.

  2. Right now no one is intimidated by Federer, because they all know he's had mono and now he's in a slump. You can't train for a few months and it will show. But... he'll be a contender again.

So, that said, all the people who did beat Federer this year, lost thereafter, because it wasn't easy.

AND FEDERER was in 2 finals this year. TWO. Everyone who didn't make it to 2 finals should retire.

I know everyone knows Roger's perfect, but my gosh the pressure on him is sick.

  3. Probaby back to #1, he has the game and is not a quitter.

  4. well, like the commentators said, fed needs to concentrate now on how to win the US open, he knows he's not going to be no. 1 anymore so he just needs to try and not to think about the rankings because for him, i think, winning a grand slam is much more important than being no.1.....btw, ivo played great, he's serves was his biggest weapon. fed couldn't even get a break..great job ivo

  5. These guys don't just give up when they loose their ranking.  The Fed

still has a lot of tennis to give to hungry crowds; his not going to lie down because of Wimbledon and one there after; he will stay and go on with his private ventures as before!  It's not the ranking or the most recent winner that makes competative tennis what it is, it's the

player and the personality he/she protrays.

  6. things can only get better for federer

  7. He really needs to find a full-time coach I think.  The air of invincibility that he used to have has dissipated.  Players are no longer intimidated by him, and actually believe they can beat him, and to be frank they have beaten him.  All credit to Federer for being as dominant as he was for so long, but everything must come to an end at one point, and apparently that's proven to be true for his reign as #1.  It might actually come as a relief to him now that he's about to lose the ranking to Nadal, and will probably take a lot of pressure off him.  He should just concentrate now on the few goals he has yet to achieve, like winning the Olympics, winning the French Open, and breaking Sampras's record and ending the debate over who is the greatest player of all time.  He's still young enough to do those things and more, including perhaps regaining his #1 ranking in the future.

  8. well since he going to be #2 there is alot of pressure off of him to be the greatest but still he has to change sumthing up like his raquet, he is using the smallest raquet on the tour at 90 squares/// he is only 27 he isnt going to retire
