  1. I wouldn't really say they are rising in defiance.

I was in Ukraine last year. They are divided nation. About half speak Russian and consider Russia their big brothers and protectors.  The other half speak Ukrainian and are about as anti-Russia as you can get.

Periodically the pendulum swings from one side to the next... like democrat/republican presidential elections.

If any leader in Ukraine acts too brazen or too swiftly, the populace has a huge backlash.  Even though half of the nation is anti Russia, those people understand that Russia controls the oil and gas imports to their nation and a large share of the crop and mineral imports.

That is why many want Ukraine to join NATO. They figure getting into NATO will give them better trade terms and incentives (cash) for national spending.

The half that doesn't want NATO are "realist" who see all that Russia exports into Ukraine and wonder how the h**l they will afford gas, food, and goods from the West?

I really think Russia is going to make out well in this fight.

I think some of its neighbors - Ukraine, Armenia, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia are going to start to question what benefit being in NATO or having a missle defence system for America will have.  Especially, when Georgia screwed up and underestimated Russia will... but NATO is just using  "strong diplomacy".

  2. They lived under the tyrany of the Soviet Union.  They want no part of being absorbed back into Russia.

  3. Good for them. Why? Obviously because they realize that if Georgia falls, they are next. Everyone in the world but the Russian people know what Putin is up too. Well, everyone but them and the EU.

  4. Russia don't want to have any conflicts with Ukraine, especially supported by the US.

Military forces in Georgia were sent to help peacemaker force (which was sent there years ago to keep peace between Ossetia and Georgia by the UN) and which was attacked by georgian militaries. Also they help ossetian people, cause most of them have russian passports and citizenship.

If Ukraine will dare to enter the conflict, consequences may be fatal, because other countries of USSR in the past won't just watch the war near their borders...

What about the ships - it's a great mistake. Most of them are now in Sevastopol and rent, paid by russian fleet base is almost the only source of money for the city... Ukraine warned Russia about the base, so, they're already building a new one in Novorossiysk. When it finished, fleet will leave Ukraine with with all the ensuing consequences...

  5. Because the Ukraine is a strong supporter of Georgia and vice versa, and this war could escalate into the Ukraine as it also wants to join NATO,like Georgia which Russia is greatly opposed to.

  6. I say they should bomb there ship before they leave the port !
