This is mostly for those who have been around pool (and specifically gamblers) but what is the biggest change you have seen? Mine is the willing attitude about teaching. Back in the day NOBOBY would show you a shot but now everybody is coaching.

  1. Good answer Straight  It really did mean more in the old days when they very well could have their last dollar on the line.Kinda like Doc Holiday giving Ike Clanton Bulletts before a gunfight

Nowdays if I wont show you a shot you can just look on the net in 20 diff places to learn it

  2. I think the main reason why it was so hard to find quality instruction, let's say during the depression era, is because the game itself held more importance for the players.  A loss could mean the difference between sleeping in an alley or in a comfy bed, between a good meal and going hungry.  It was in most people's best interest not to reveal anything that would give somebody else an edge.  Today, starving to death isn't such a factor.  There are a few main motives for people wanting to share knowledge today, some are more noble than others.  Some people genuinely enjoy seeing people improve and grow to love the game even more.  Some people do it for ego or to try to impress others.  Some do it to make money.  Making money in instruction is fine, as long as quality doesn't suffer.  There are a few, even within the BCA (few and far between thankfully), whom I've noticed care more about making a quick buck than actually helping anybody.  You're right.  There's as much competition among sources of information as there is between players on the tables.

I think the participation of women is one of the biggest changes that I've noticed.  It's becoming more and more common to see women pick up a cue and actually kick some ***.  Just an observation.  M.D.-BCA Instructor/Referee.
