  1. Onboard internet generally starts at $1/minute and goes down to as "low" as 50c/minute if you buy a big package.  And it's slow because it's over a satellite connection.

If you want cheaper internet, in each port there will be internet cafes.  They're usually close to the port, but ask any crewmember -- they rush over there too.

If you're interested in cell phone access (including cell phone internet) you can check prices and availability here:

BTW, if you'd like to share stories and pictures from your cruise, you can get a free online Cruise Journal here:

Hope you have a great trip!

  2. I cruised on the Gem a few months ago and here's the deal.

First, there is a charge for the internet on ship  and its very expensive (about $50 to $60 per hr) and does not work very well, especially when the ship is moving.   They also offer wireless internet access for a hefty fee.  Plus, they charge you a one time connection/registration fee of $4.95.

Then the area that they have for using the internet is right in the Atrium and has about 5 stations that are really jammed up close together.  The future cruise consultant's desk is right next to these stations and there is all of the traffic and noise from the atrium around.  So its really not a good place for it.  Its clear that they didn't give the internet much thought in the design of the ship and give it its own room somewhere.

My advice is skip the ship's internet and look for an internet cafe in your port stop.  Here's a link to a couple places in Nassau, Bahamas:  http://www.bahamas.com/bahamas/island/te...

  3. You have to pay for it and it is pretty expensive and it's slow.

As already said, go to an Internet Cafe ashore, cheaper and faster.

    Enjoy your cruise.

  4. There is an onboard internet cafe. They do have plans and specials, but is still expensive. Straight out, it's 75c a minute. Some ships have high speed wireless, but that would cost extra too. You're only on the Gem for a week. I'd just tell everyone ahead of time that you'll be on a cruise and forget the internet for a week.

Using the phone at sea is the same story. The best way to call home during the trip is to buy a prepaid calling card from a vendor on some island and use a public phone.

We'll be in the same vacinity a week after you on the Caribbean Princess!!!

    Bon Voyage!!!
