Question:

Noxious fumes from gas oven?

Our gas oven was giving off a peculiar odor last night - it was a slight burning/noxious/fume smell. The oven hadn't been used recently. It wasn't a sulfur smell, and all of the pilot lights were lit, so I'm positive it wasn't a gas leak. It kept getting worse, and after a while, my wife and I were both feeling a little light-headed. We opened the windows and I shut off the gas supply to the oven. I called my landlord this morning and he said if it wasn't gas, I shouldn't worry about it. That makes me a little concerned, as this smell seemed pretty heavy - it was like we were burning a charcoal grill indoors. Should I worry about this?

  1. Now let me get this straight....you say you noticed this noxious odor, you got light headed etc. and you are wondering if you should worry about it? OF COURSE YOU SHOULD WORRY ABOUT IT!!!! And, don't be put off by your landlord's idiotic comments. Call the gas company, tell them you suspect that you may have a gas leak - they will come pronto and check for you. In addition, check the venting for the stove, it could be partially blocked, which could cause a carbon monoxide build-up... if that happens, you won't have to worry, because you'll be dead. Don't mean to be smart, but this is a serious situation that requires immediate assistance from the gas company.

  2. sounds like you have a problem with your stove. you were getting lightheaded from the gas. you should try calling your gas provider and have them send out a serviceman. if the stove is a problem they will red tag your service and you will not be able to use gas until the problem is corrected.
