  1. it means talk about the "fuel" used to make nuclear power, which is radioactive material, talk about how it is made usable for nuclear power and, yes, other uses for radioactive materials.

  2. The nucleus of an atom is made up of protons and neutrons. The number of protons define the element. For example, any atom with 92 protons is an atom of uranium. However, the number of neutrons does not have to equal the number of protons. Depending on the number of neutrons in a given nucleus, you can have different isotopes of the same element. Uranium 235 is a typical fission reaction fuel - it is an isotope of uranium that contains 92 protons and 143 neutrons. It is radioactive. In a fission reaction, this nucleus absorbs an additional neutron and then splits into two atoms - one of strontium and the other of xenon - and liberates two neutrons and a lot of energy in the process. The two neutrons create additional fission reactions that can continue the process; the energy can light your home or level a city, depending on how quickly the reaction takes place.
