Nudnida Luangnam ousts Varatchaya Wongteanchai in the final qualifier - Guangzhou Women's Open 2012
World number 250, Nudnida Luangnam, registered her first head-to-head triumph against the 23-year-old Thai professional, Varatchaya Wongteanchai, in the final qualifying round of the GRC Bank Guangzhou International Women's Open
on Monday. She won the match in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 taking just an hour and 39 minutes to accomplish the goal of making it to the main round of the contest.
Previous three battles between the two compatriots were all won by the 301st ranked Wongteanchai. So, the chances on an upset were pretty high but the 250th ranked Thai saved some respect for herself and thumped
her opponent comfortably in straight sets to book a spot in the first round of the contest.
Luangnam started the match in blistering style; smashed three winners down the line to bag the opening serve game. She resisted for sometime against her compatriot in the following game but couldn’t extract a breakpoint; did extremely
well to hold serve and reverse the pressure back to her rival who faltered miserably in the fourth game and gifted a crucial breakpoint to her.
The 25-year-old Thai kept the pressure on her rival and bagged another serve game to make it 4-1 in her favour. She won four back-to-back points in the following game to lead the scores 5-1 and didn’t allow a single chance to her
rival that could have registered a possibility of a comeback in the final game of the first set.
Wongteanchai started the second half of the match in good style; held her serve and had two great opportunities to take an early lead but couldn’t convert them in her favour. Suddenly, the momentum swirled against her and she failed
to win a single point on her serve; almost donating the breakpoint to her rival. An exchange of breakpoints in the following two games kept the lead intact for Luangnam.
The 23-year-old Wongteanchai fought back to win a breakpoint in the eighth game but couldn’t hold her serve in the following play. An elder Thai professional grabbed the triumph with a classy winner. Now, she awaits the updation
of draws to know about her first round opponent.
