Nudnida Luangnam scampers past Elena Bovina into the main round – Malaysian Open 2012
Russian veteran, Elena Bovina, was undone by the inferior ranked Thai contestant, Nudnida Luangnam, in the final qualifying round of the BMW Malaysian Open tournament. It was a one-sided encounter lasting an hour and 38 minutes
before the Thai grabbed the win in straight sets 6-2, 6-4.
They have never played each other before so there was no psychological pressure on either contestant. No mind games were played and simple matchup between the two contenders ended up in favour of the deserving winner from Thailand.
Bovina registered a successful serve hold to commence the proceedings but unfortunately couldn’t hold her serve in two following games and trailed 1-4 at the start. She tried hard to win a break back and deplete the trail but her
efforts were not enough to power down the Thai opponent, who looked extremely efficient with her footwork and shot selection.
No further breakpoints were witnessed in the set and Luangnam trounced the Russian; sparing just two games for her to register an opening set lead. The task was monumental for the veteran who was already tiring; probably the aging
factor was having its effects. She had to win the next two sets to move into the main round which was obviously close to impossible, given her dismal run and drained stamina.
She lost the opening game of the second set and then again the in the fifth game to trail 1-4 for the second time in the match. However, this time she won a breakpoint back to lower the trail with scores pushing to 2-4. She had
a golden opportunity to gobble up another breakpoint in the tenth game but fell short of her requirements and lost the second set as well.
The triumph for the Thai participant was expected as she was in a better form and her footwork was more efficient than her opponent. She progresses to the main round of the contest and awaits the updated draws list to identify
her next competitor.
Other three qualifiers include the Taiwanese contestant, Su-Wei Hsieh, Karolina Pliskova and her twin sister Kristyna Pliskova of Czech Republic.
