Question:

Numb foot while running?

A few months ago I started to get shin splints, they got worse and I mentioned it to my doctor at a check up. He suggested I slow down and take a couple weeks to heal. I did and for the past few weeks only jogged for about 10-20 minutes or went for walks. Now that I've started again, my foot seems to go numb about 15 minutes into the run. It's not painful, just annoying and tiring. I've heard your foot going numb accompanie shin splints, but those are gone. Any suggestion on what I should do?

  1. I have never had this problem but have had a host of others.  Two thoughts: 1. what kind of surface do you run on.  Tracks are best, dirt trails, then blacktop.  Stay off concrete.  There is no give. 2. Do you have good shoes?  My doctor is a runner and his first reaction to my running injuries is buy new shoes.

I have always thought that a lot of running injuries come from poor mechanics.

  2. p**p

  3. sounds exactly like me. :P

i didn't know anyone else had this problem. haha.

i asked my coach about it, he said he didn't know what it was about. so i've just had to get used to it.

so, i don't really have any advice for you. :/

but if i ever figure anything out, i'll let you know.

  4. Are your shoes run down? Do you need a new pair? Or are they tied too tight. This would be the first thing I would check if I was having either issue.

  5. I had surgery on my feet a few times and with a certain pair of shoes only my toes tend to go numb. I would try changing shoes first.

I think my problem is nerve damage aggravated by the interior of the shoes I was wearing. You might want to ask your doctor about if you could potentiall have nerve damage. That's probably not it but...
