I was wondering whether anyone has ideas with number games for preschools (but not the games you play on computer or number cards.)? If anyone has any ideas, that would be great, thanks.

  1. -Parking cars: we have lots of trikes and cars the kids play on-so I laminated some large numbers blue taced to the wall and put numbers on each car....each car/trike had a parking space...children could match the numerals, talk abotu where they had parked and at tidy up time could say which car was missing.

-Singing-with props or children as the props eg: 5 little monkeys, 5 current buns etc.

The next day we extended this and had a car wash-child parked the car-picked up ticket and took to shop keeper who then arranged for that number car to be washed...was so cute and they took it really seriously :)

    Other ideas:

-Writing numbers in thin layer of sand with finger can also be done with foam soap (cheap from tesco), salt, ketchup.

-Making a number book-children go on walk about with digi cam and take pictures of things- eg: two leaves, phone number written on door, one tree, three snail shells...adult can print off pictures and children help to glue on card then laminate and staple together/tie together.

-Shop keeper: Make a grocery shop (can bring in healthy eating) kids can have fun making price labels, using till, credit cards, playing with money-the level of numeracy involved can be differentiated eg: children who understand numbers can use them correctly, others can make up own numbers and change to just have fun playing with numbers.

    Hope this helps x

  2. Get a fish pattern and make 10 with numbers on them - number on one side, dots on the other so they can count.  Put a paper clip on each fish. then tie a magnet onto a dowel rod and they can go fishing for numbers -fun!

  3. Colored Flash cards work just fine.

  4. Focus on rhymes and songs with numbers and counting such as Ten In The Bed, This Old Man, The ants go marching, Who Stole the Cookie, 1-2 Buckle My Shoe, Bottle of pop, 100 Bottles of Pop on the wall ( can't use beer anymore, lol).

Remember, a lot of math concepts are taught  without actually using numbers such as working with blocks, copying patterns, more than, less than, taller, shorter, shapes, stringing beads in patterns etc.

  5. hide numbers around the room and have them find them. Or make them count themselves by tapping them on the head.

  6. When I taught preschool I would do center math - I would have a table with 10 chairs and 10 assignments -

    minute rotation

1- count keys write the number on the table with washable marker - once done and correct - move to the next chair

2- scoop out the live gold fish into the other bowel - three trys and that was your number - found the number out of the pile of flash cards - move to the next chair

3- put ten beads in the small neck bottle - write the number of beads still let on the table

4- make a seven out of seven popcile sticks

5- drive four cars into the parking lot ( have five cars - number the stalls for them - use marker on the table

when you are all done have the preschoolers clean the tables with shaving cream - have them clean off the shaving cream in the bathroom - now ready for snack time

I hope this helps I taught with 14 to 16 4yrs one aide and I learn to do centers - I had no budget - private school - boy were they smart.

  7. There is a number game, you put the numbers 1-10 in a hat and get everyone to pick one out (if you have a bigger class just make another version so you have 20 numbers but still 1-10 just repeated) and they have to find each other with the number that when they add together, they make 10.

I'm sorry if this seems a bit too difficult.
