Number of players expected to rise in the 2012 Masters
The Masters Tournament officials announced that invitations have been sent out to 104 players for the 2012 edition of the tournament scheduled to take place from April 2 to 8.
The first three days of the tournament will include practice sessions and the event will officially begin on April 5, 2012.
According to the Chairman of the Augusta National Golf Club and the Masters Tournament, Billy Payne, 92 golfers of the 104 invited are expected to contend against each other.
"We are delighted to welcome this impressive collection of players to Augusta National Golf Club in 2012," Payne said.
He continued, "We are equally enthusiastic to showcase our golf course and the world's best competitors for the enjoyment of golf fans around the globe".
In the 2011Masters, a total of 99 players from all over the world competed against each other. The number of players is expected to increase this year, with so many young stars qualifying for the tournament.
Of the 104 players invited, 14 will be making their debuts in the event. Moreover, six amateur players who performed outstandingly in the last season have also been invited to the championship.
Apart from the invitations sent out, there are still opportunities for other players to register themselves for the tournament. For that purpose, the tournament officials have set two conditions.
According to the first condition, if a player wins a tournament prior to the 2012 Masters that awards full FedEx points, he will automatically be qualified for the major event.
Secondly, if someone lists themselves among the top 50 golfers in the Official World Golf Rankings one week prior to the commencement of the tournament, they can also get an invitation for the competition.
The tournament’s website will be updated from time to time if there are any additions to the invitations.
The winners will be added on a weekly basis and the top 50 players will be confirmed one week before the event.
South African young star, Chаrl Schwаrtzel, will be defending his title in 2012, as he outclassed Australians Jason Day and Adam Scott with a two-stroke lead at the end of the tournament.
