  2. When the first two numbers is added to twice the second the result is 21, but when the second number is added to twice the first, the result is 18. Find the two numbers.

    let
       x= smaller number
       y= larger number

    solve:

    equation 1  : X+2y=21
    equation 2  : y+x=18

    rearrange the equation 2 and the it will be x+y=18 then add

    x+2y=21
    x+y=18
    _______

    3y=39
    _______
    3

    = y = 13

    then lets solve for x ... substitute 13 to equation 2 it will be..

    y(13)+x =18
    13+x=18
    x = 18-13
    x = 5

    (5,13)

    check

    substitute 5 and 13 to equation 2

    13 + 5 = 18
         18= 18
    (correct)
