Indian middle-order batsman, VVS Laxman said numbers don’t matter when one goes out to perform for his country, and also hopes to fulfill his dream of beating http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 in an away series.
The Indian Test veteran has become an integral part of the Men In Blue contingent, which are looking to regain their no 1 Test supremacy. After suffering an embarrassing defeat on tour of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013, the sub continent giants have rose well and outplayed their
current opponents, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/West-Indies-c760 to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three match Test series.
The main contributor for them has been Laxman, who again showed his class and importance with a commanding unbeaten knock of 176 in his favoured stadium of Kolkata, which allowed his team an easy innings win against the Caribbean outfit in the second Test
match.
For Laxman, numbers are simply a by-product of contributing well for the team and emphasized the importance of collective efforts.
"It's not the numbers that matter but performances that win the game for your country," he averred. "I'm content and satisfied with what I have done but like any professional sportsperson I always strive to improve."
Since making his debut in 1996, the player has gone on to represent his team in 129 Test matches, scoring 8563 runs at an impressive average of 47.30. Over the years, the Indians have been labelled as a team not good on their travels.
Having played under different captains, Laxman recognizes the changes in approaches and how the team has evolved in becoming the best in the longer version of the game. Reaching Test supremacy in 2009 was a pivotal achievement for him, which he will cherish
forever.
"We had the reputation of being poor travellers when I started but it got better with time. For the likes of Sourav (Ganguly), Rahul (Dravid) and Anil (Kumble) winning overseas mattered a lot and we could successfully change the trend with a different mental
approach to series abroad," added Laxman.
Finally the veteran also spoke of his burning desire of winning a series in Down Under. With the Indians touring the Aussies next month, it might give Laxman the final chance to make sure he achieves such feat before ending his illustrious career.
