Question:

Numbers in a poetry essay?

I'm currently working on a poetry essay but I'm not too certain whether or not I should put numbers in it rather than words.

I know as a general rule, it's ideal to spell out the numbers (unless it's overly long) but what about the verse/line number in poetry? Would I express it as:

Line 8 of the sonnet

or

Line eight of the sonnet?

Personally, the one with the number seems more correct but I'm not too sure.

  1. Either would be correct - the number looks better and is easier to read. The main thing is to be consistent - if you do it one (1?) way you should stick with it.

  2. Line 8, simply because often poems have these numbers written beside their verses anyways
