Benfica legend Nuno Gomes has been snubbed by the club for a new contract and the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Portugal-c2984 international is now looking for a change of scenery after serving the Eagles for almost a decade.
“There have been many reports about my situation in Benfica, and today I can confirm that Benfica have not offered me a new contract. It is a technical decision that I respect and will always respect, but from this moment I am free to consider all proposals
that can arise.” Gomes revealed.
“Benfica bid me farewell, wishing me best luck for the future and thanked me for everything I have given for this shirt both on and off the field,” said the 34-year-old striker.
The former Portuguese International started his career with the youth ranks of Boa Vista and moved up the pecking order, before eventually moving to Benfica in 1997.
With the Eagles, he established himself as a Top quality goalscorer by netting 60 goals in only 100 outings for the Lisbon-based club. His remarkable scoring record and exposure at the 2000 European Championships with the Portuguese national team sparked
interest in a host of European clubs and Fiorentina ultimately lured the highly-rated forward for a fee of €17 million.
But the move did not last long, as Fiorentina went bankrupt and Gomes found himself back on the books of Benfica. His much awaited return to Portuguese Primeira Liga did not live up to the hype, as his scoring became infrequent, though, he found the back
of the net 15 times in the 2005/06 season.
His appearances became even patchier as he found himself behind Oscar Cardozo for a spot in the team. His contribution in the 2010/11 season was even more meagre and it is now confirmed that he will leave his beloved Benfica.
The Estadio do Luz officials offered him a coaching role at the helm, but he refused, as he believes that he can still play for one more season.
Many clubs are willing to take the veteran goalscorer, with notable interest from clubs in the MLS, UAE Pro League and Serie A, but it is still undecided where the former Selecao International will end up.
