Former Benfica striker, Nuno Gomes, will sign with Sporting Braga, according to the club president Antonio Salvador.
"It was very easy to reach an agreement. For Braga, it is very good to have a player with the history and the importance of Nuno Gomes," Salvador said.
"Fortunately, Braga can have a player with such a profile. I hope he will be very happy."
The veteran was not offered a new contract at Estadio da Luz despite his desire stay to with the club. Although Benfica officials tempted the Selecao International with a coaching role, the 34-year-old rejected the deal, as he still felt that he could contribute
to a team for another year regardless of his advanced years.
Gomes was continually linked with a move away from the Portuguese Primeira Liga, but he chose to ignore offers from the UAE Pro League, Serie A and MLS to stay in the league, where he has notched nearly 149 goals.
The goal poacher started his career with Amarante but later moved to Boa Vista in 1990. He moved up the ranks at Estádio do Bessa and made his first team debut with the Panthers in 1994. His undoubted talents were far too good for the Porto outfit and he
was snapped by Benfica in 1997.
Gomes was in red hot form for the Eagles and found the back of the net an incredible 60 times in only 100 outings for them. His goalscoring feats, coupled with his International exposure at the 2000 European Championship with the Portugal national team,
earned him a move to Italian giants http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/ACF-Fiorentina-c38209 for a mouth watering fee of €17 million in 2000.
His move to the defensive Serie A was supposed to be the highlight of his glittering career but it soon turned into a nightmare, as the Gigliati went bankrupt and a disappointed Gomes returned to Benfica in 2002.
The goal poacher became an immediate fan favourite after his re-signing and netted 15 crucial goals in the 2005/2006 campaign, elevating his already legendary status with the Red faithful. While his return was an initial success, his later years at the
Lisbon-based club never reached the dizzying heights set in the previous seasons and he gradually fell down the pecking order at the helm.
His career with the Eagles dropped to an all time low as he was cast aside due to the mercurial talent of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Oscar-c28720 Cardozo and spent his time warming the bench, occasionally taking to the pitch as a late substitute.
Gomes’s meagre contribution last season spelled the end of the career with his beloved Benfica and he now looks to give all he can muster to Braga to land a spot in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Portugal-c2984 national team for next year’s European Championships.
