Nunthorpe Stakes – A top class event in England
England can easily be called the home of horseracing, as the country hosts a lot of important events annually and runners from all over the world come and participate in them. A very important event, Nunthorpe Stakes, is held every year in August and it
provides wonderful entertainment to the fans all across the globe.
Thoroughbreds, aged two years or older, from all over the world are invited to the mega event every year and they battle out over five furlongs in order to claim the title. The race is held at York and it is named after a nearby area known as, Nunthorpe.
Plenty of horses have come at York and made history in the Nunthorpe Stakes. One of them was Tag End, who was the first ever runner to win the mega event on three occasions from 1928 until 1930. No one managed to match him for quite some time and his is
still considered to be one of the most successful horses here.
Although Tag End’s record has not yet been broken by any horse, Sharpo managed to equal it by winning in 1980, 1981 and 1982. He was also a very good performer and was known for his speed, which helped him set high standards.
Since Sharpo’s victories in three consecutive years, no one has been able to match this record until now, which shows that the level of competition in the Nunthorpe Stakes is quite high and it is not easy to take away victories here with ease.
Last year, this high class competition was won by Margot Did, who is an extremely talented filly. She was up against some quality runners and the bookies had priced her 20 to 1 back then.
The Michael Bell’s trainee started off the race strongly and took the lead pretty early. She kept on running at a good pace and held onto her lead until the end, winning by three quarters. The victory earner her owners, T. Redman and P. Philipps, a cash
prize of £156,065 in the end.
Once again the Group-1 event saw an exciting competition and the horseracing fans were entertained with a nail biting finish. The historical event holds great significance in England and it will definitely continue to attract top quality runners from all
over the world.
