Nurburgring will be hosting German Grand Prix in 2013 – Formula 1 news
The track spokesperson for Nurburgring, Karl-Heinz Steinkuehler, has stated that the German Grand Prix, the future of which has been uncertain for a while, will be hosted by Nurburgring in 2013 as scheduled by the FIA.
“The F1 world has long known that the [race on] 7 July will run at the Nurburgring,” the spokesperson told Sport-Bild.
The German GP has always been alternated to take place between the Eifel circuit at Nurburgring and Hockenheim because both circuits cannot afford to host a F1 Grand Prix on annual basis. The 2012 German GP had been hosted at Hockenheim and the 2013 race
was to be hosted at the Eifel circuit. However, it was reported that the particular circuit was dealing with some financial problems that had arisen due to the failed attempt to make an amusement park on the premises. As a result it became uncertain if the
circuit had enough funds to host the German GP in the 2013 F1 season.
Meanwhile, Hockenheim had also expressed concerns regarding their inability to host the race in case Nurburgring confirms that they will not be organising the event. Hence, it had become uncertain if there will be a German GP in 2013 or not.
However, with the current statement, it seems that the German GP will be held as scheduled. The race has already been rescheduled as it was moved a week forward. The change had been made by the FIA in order to make a slot available for another European event,
the identity of which still remains unrevealed.
The Eifel circuit was a new ring built in 1984 with high safety standards but F1 fans were of the opinion that this new circuit was not as good as the old track known as ‘The Green h**l’. It also hosted the 1984 European GP.
The German GP has been part of the F1 World Championship since its beginning as the race was held at Nurburgring in 1951. The race was held at Hockenheim from 1977 to 2006 with only the race held at Nurburgring in 1985. The decision to alternate the race
between the two circuits was taken later.
