Nuria Llagostera Vives defeats Alize Cornet in the second round – French Open 2011

Spain’s Nuria Llagostera Vives undid French Alize Cornet in the second round of 2011 French Open, defeating her opponent in straight sets to reach the third round of the tournament. The Spaniard pro managed to defeat her French
opponent in straight sets 6-0, 6-2, taking a little over an hour and twenty six minutes to qualify for the third round.
Vives entered the field with the belief that this was her match to win and with Cornet all at sea from the start. The Spaniard was ultimately able to force the pace of the match against her defensively-minded opponent, breaking
Cornet on five occasions as the Cornet’s serving let her down time and again.
Cornet, who served big and seemed to go for broke at ease, really should have won this match as Vives labored under the hot conditions. But Cornet failed to take advantage of her opportunities and played a horrible second round
match to give away the match in straight sets.
Indeed, Cornet could only manage to land 60 percent of his first serves, though they were pretty good, but Vives feasted on her weaker serve, winning 73 percent of points on her first serves and 60 percent of points on her second
serves. The Spaniard pro broke Cornet’s serve in the fifth game to clinch the first set 6-0.
The second set was a more competitive one, as Cornet seemed to realize that her chance in the third round was at stake. But her opponent’s serve appeared as venomous as ever when she saw off two break points in the second set,
before cornet gifted her a break with two double faults at the crucial moment. The Spaniard converted two of five breakpoints and fired fifteen winners to close out the set with a 6-2 score line.
Vives won 71 percent on her service, 54 percent on return and 67 points in total. Cornet on the other hand was completely lagging behind in every field with 56 percent on service, a meager 29 percent on return and a total of 43
points in total. Spaniard’s brilliant performance in every field, strongly suggested her victory over his opponent in straight sets. The 31-year-old Spaniard established a huge pressure on her opponent which definitely helped her winning the match.
the Spaniard will next face Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia, who dispatched Mona Barthel of Germany in the second round of the tournament. The two players have already met each other at the fourth round of Miami Masters where
Pavlyuchenkova defeated the Spaniard to hold 1-0 edge.
Pavlyuchenkova is ranked 15th in the world which makes her ninety seven places higher than Vives. The Spaniard will have to come up with something extraordinary if she wishes to the reach the third round of
the Roland Garros.
