Nurse board Mo dui, and other offense?

I am probably going to regret asking this here, but I will any way. I am a nursing student completing my 4th semester and filing for boards.

I was hoping to here from other nurses with similar problems to my own.

I had a DUI about 3 yrs ago, just before beginning school, I also was arrested for drinking under age in 1999. I have to suspended impositions of sentence, both misdemeanors, one was shoplifting from a Walmart in 2002 and the other was leaving the scene of an accident in 2003. I meet the terms of probation in both cases and the convictions were removed from my record.

I have attended SATOPS, court ordered, I am an honors student who has been on the deans list three years runing, I am a member of the Alpha Kappa Mu honors Society, and have 3.75 GPA. I have letters from a previous employer, where I worked as Tech, and from one of my clinical instructors, saying that I am a responsible person of good character.

I made some bad mistakes when I was young. I was hoping others with tarnished backgrounds could tell me that they had been allowed to take the boards, and whether or not they got a probationary license, if they had restrictions on their license.

If so, how did that effect your carer? Are you able to get a license in another state? If that happens will it follow me my whole professional life?

Thank you so much, I am having panic attacks :)

  1. You need to be honest, provide documentation of everything that happened, including court records and your treatment records.

It shouldn't affect you but if it does make sure you ask for an appeal and plead your case.

    GOOD LUCK!

  2. I think you will be ok. I'm not familiar with the nursing regs in your state, but in most cases your license would only be in jeopardy if you have a felony conviction. When I renew my license each time I am asked if I have had any felony convictions since the last renewal.

Now,if you were a repeat DUI offender or had a drug related conviction they may think about a probationary license. But,since your convictions were years ago and you've proven yourself to be of good character with outstanding grades you should be alright.

The best thing to do would be to call your state nursing board and ask them. That way you will know for sure and won't be stressed out when you take your boards.

For the things you were charged with, there shouldn't be any restrictions on your license.

Good luck on your boards and hope you enjoy being a nurse,it is a great profession.
