  1. Nature walk-woods, and parks: Can observe children looking at nature, finding things to do with them, collecting them, talking about them, sorting them....you can do almost every aspect of curriculum! Esp Foundation Stage and Birth To Three.

Bikes/Trikes/Cars: Watch and listen to children using their role play skills, seeking out others, their communication and alos the physical skills involved.

Chalks and water paints-creative based activity children can use resources to draw on ground or walls. Can se what they choose, how they use it, what they do, anything they investigate eg: chalk AND water mixed together, language used, sharing skills etc.

Almost anything can be done outside....physical activites involving running, jumping etc are sometimes best outdoors as there's more space so you could also do a PE style activity.

Theorist: Piaget, Sheridan, Vgotsky, Froebel, Issac..they are all development and play.

  2. The activities varies pending the age of the children. If they are toddlers one thing I like to do is baby food finger paint. It is an out door activity and messy but loads of fun. Plan ahead & take the high chairs outside. On warm day strip the toddlers down to a diaper & make sure they are in the shade. Take their favorite baby food and put it in a small part of a paper plate. Show them how to make lines and circles. If they put the food in their mouth no big deal. be sure to check for allergies.

For pre-school I like to use bubbles. It is meaty messy and fun. I mix children baby shampoo and water in a small plastic pool. Then I pull out the hula-hoops and other bubble toys and we make bubbles. If you have enough soap you let a child stand in the water and be still. Put the hula-hoop around them and shake the hoop in the water. Pull the hoop up very slowly and the child will be in a bubble. You can write about the reaction and the relation to the other students.

  3. Water paint! Get brushes, water - let then "paint" the drive, the house, whatever!

Wash your car!!! (You will have to go behind them, if you really want it clean!)

    Bubbles!

Eat every lunch outside - lots of learning to be done - insects, clouds, trees, flowers, colors, counting, birds....

All the above answers!!! Most of all enjoy!!!

  4. sand pit and water tray. planting flower bulbs, beasty hunt, treasure hunt, teddy bears picnic, giant chalks on the pavement, chase and tick. giant snakes and ladders etc, football etc team games.

  5. We take out our indoor toys and put them on mats for them to play with.

Have you thought about setting up a role play area - kitchen - thats a good observation.

As is a treasure basket - did this with my 1 year olds and they played consistently with it for 1 hour!

  6. Tree/leaf rubbings

Simple planting, sunflowers, that type of thing.

    Worm collecting

    Insect observations

  7. If you are doing an observation based on outdoor activities with children ... my best advice is not to intentionally plan an activity.

I've worked in preschool for almost 5 years and I have to do observations based on the CT state benchmarks. The best observation is a natural one not a planned one.

With a planned one ... children may not be interested or they might rush through the activity so they can go back to what they were originally doing.

With a natural one, children are at their peak interest and are enjoying themselves in the moment. You could observe a child experimenting with dirt, leaves, plants, etc. You can observe a child with cause and effect. There's a multitude of natural activities that you could observe that the children will throroughly enjoy.
