Hi

My daughter is 3 on 20th of this month (jan) and is down for a place in the local primary school for a nursery place. I thought they would take her in Easter, but they are now saying its this september, meaning she'll be just over 3.5yrs.

Does this mean she'll be one of oldest or yougest in her year? Also when would she go into proper schooling, not nursery?

  1. Pre-School usually take children from 2.6 to 4.11 year olds.

Most Nurseries start at 3 and a half-ish unless they have space available.

Main stream schooling is usually the term of their 5th birthday so probably be Easter 2010.

As for if she'll be oldest or youngest she'll probably be neither. The oldest will be 4 and a bit and youngest 3.5yrs! Not that it matters as most nurseries do cater for the range of abilities.

www.direct.gov.uk is a great site for parents with educational questions.

  2. There are 2 intakes. Jan and Sept. Children born between Sept 1 and 29 March are able to join nursery in the Sept after the 3rd birthday.1 April  to 31 Aug children star in Jan.

    Some nurseries now take earlier.

Get in touch with your nursery nd talk with them.

  3. she will start nursery in sept  this year and go to school sept next year i had the same prob with my lil gal

  4. Nurseries only take children as soon as they are three if they have spaces, so by January, most of the spaces will already be filled. Not many nurseries have intakes throughout the year because it's unsettling for the children who are already there. In September she will be in the oldest third of the year, as the childlren who start then will be turning four after 1st of September, otherwise, if they were four before then, they would have gone into reception.

She will have a full year in the nursery, which is probably enough and she will go into reception in Sept 09. Don't wish her life away! Just enjoy her company and get her ready for nursery by going to a good preschool - from after the Easter break she will be entitled to 5 free session of early years education a week. Most preschools are getting filled up by then, so get her name down quickly.

Spend plenty of time doing fun things together like painting, singing and reading her stories, and talk to her as much as possible. One of the most important things to help children to settle in to nursery is good communiction skills.

They grow up too fast, so make the best of your time together!! :-)

  5. Proper schooling the following year, but in a lot of schools if they are not down for the nursery you can't get them in.

She is likely to be one of the older children, but thats ok.

  6. she will go school this September,my daughter will be 3 in July and starts in Sept and she will be one of the youngest
