i live in a suburb in IL with HORRIBLE rusty water. i've always been told that nursery water is the best to use when making my son's bottles (now 4 months), and that the flouride is a necessity for him.

however, the past few days i've been reading things about how nursery water is NOT good for babies anymore? what's that about? what should i use instead?

  1. Water is water! Theres not much of a difference

  2. Nursery water is not very good for babies under 6 months of age, because it contains floride and the current recommendation by dentists is that babies do not need floride till 6 months of age. (they do need it 6 months + )

You can use bottled water, or boil the water.

PS: to the user that posted above - you do need floride, babies can not brush their teeth with toothpaste, so when they drink floride it becomes present in their saliva, and thats how their teeth are cleaned. The research showed that under 6 months of age, there is a small chance that floride may damage them. At 6 months its a different story. You can go to AAD (american academy of dentists) for current recommendations.

  3. Use a non-fluoridated bottled water.  You're right, new research shows that fluoride does a lot more harm than good and should never be ingested.  There's a good chance your municipal water supply is fluoridated, a lot of cities are behind the times on the facts where fluoride is concerned, and water filters do not get rid of fluoride.  If, however, your city does NOT add fluoride to your water (ours does not) then you can put a water filter on your faucet and use the tap.

  4. With all my kids i have used purified water.  You know...just your typical hinckley and schmidt purified water.  They seem to have had no problems with that so far.  When Anthony, the first, had trouble pooping the doctor suggested a purified water...or even distilled water.  I've used it ever since.  When it comes to the flouride, he said not to use it until baby has at least a few teeth.  They say in research 6 months plus because that's usually around the time babies start teething.  Anyway...lol...i still don't use nursery water.  I use purified water.  And if we are going on a walk and i know the kids need water...i tend to keep the tiny bottles of dannon water with flouride.
