Nurses I work with hate their job, should I be worried about hating my job when I graduate nursing school? ?

I am a third year nursing student and I graduate soon. I work at a local hospital as a nurse tech and I love it there. The only problem is I have come across very few nurses who enjoy being a nurse. It makes me worry about my job as a nurse in the future. Recently a nurse I work with told me she is putting her daughter through nursing school, and another nurse overheard and said "what did you tell her to become a nurse for", and the nurse replied with "because she's an idiot." Constant complaints over money, patients, and whatnot. Is it worth being a nurse!! Any RNs reading this please comment on this.

  1. Just like the first person said, they do it for money, so yeah they will hate it.  Im almost done getting my degree and plan on being a nurse.  However Im going to get my Masters in Forensic Nursing, now thats what I really want to do.  So me working where ever for the time being, might not be all fun and games for me, but I know that in the end thats where my heart is.  You said you love your job.  So chances are you will still love your job.  Also a lot of nurses pick up extra shifts because of the overtime, again in it for the money.  Those who do that, who dont like the job in the first place will be complaining a lot also.

  2. First I would like to state that I am not an RN, so I am speaking from a general point of view here.

I think that in every industry you are going to find some who detest their job. For whatever reason, every morning they get up and go to work with a forced smile on their face, only to return home later in the day tired, frustrated, and moody. When you choose a career involving work you dislike, you are not going to feel you are accomplishing anything, and instead feel like the motions are all you can go through and that negativity spreads to those around that person.

Do you like helping people? Are you a people person? Do you have a strong stomach (for the blood and gore that every nurse must face)?

If you think you can make a difference by helping people who are sick and in need of care, then I think you are following the right path for you. You have put a lot of time and effort into becoming a nurse; if it makes you happy than don't let other people's opinions shape your future.

What career you choose is completely up to you. My reccomendation is to decide if nursing will make you happy, and if so, then go for it! If not, then start thinking about alternatives. Education in nursing can be applied easily to home care, senior facilities, and even childcare. I

Good luck, and remember, they are shaping their futures, don't let them shape yours as well!

  3. There are a lot of nurses who don't like their job and they only do it for the money. It's a personal opinion. Some people hate being a nurse or some of them hate the location they work in. The point is, if you love it then you'll probably still love it when you graduate. I think sometimes the pressure of working long hours and getting some cranky/ungrateful patients can get to people.

  4. I'm in the boat! I'm in nursing school too. I was volunteering in a hospital and a lot of nurses were complaining. But I love it. I love the fact that I'm going to help people. I think most people do it because of the money but if you have the passion I think you will be ok. My mom works in a doctors office as a certified medical assistant, I talked to the nurses that work there and they love it they said they wouldn't do anything else. Stick with it I know how you feel! GOOD LUCK!!!!!! :)

  5. Stay with it and make a difference.  Patients sense when a nurse's heart isn't in their work and it makes them lose confidence in their care.  A very bleak picture if you are seriously ill and dependent on them.  They should not be doing the job if they hate it so much.  I hope I'm never in their 'care'.

Finish your training and teach those junior to you what true nursing is.
