Question:

Nursing in Auckland.. Information please?!?

I am a Filipino Registered Nurse (RN) currently living and working in the Philippines. I am contemplating on working in Auckland and stay with my Aunt who lives in Pakuranga, initially, for some time.

My question(s) are:

1. How difficult is it to find a RN job around Auckland?

2. How adequate would a salary of NZ$ 42,000 per annum be for a single person in terms of covering living expenses like rent for a 1 bedroom flat, food, bills, transport fare or car, etc?

3. How is it possible to obtain a second part time job?

I would appreciate answers from Auckland residents or from those lived there previously.

Thank you for your time..

  1. 1.Your probably already aware there are allot of Filipino nurses in NZ. I am pretty sure they may have even gone to the philippines to select numbers of them. I notice allot of the private hospitals have large percent that Filipino. So getting work i am sure no real problem.

    2. $42000 would still give you a higher level of life in NZ than you would be getting for the same job in phil. If you staying down around the South Auckland area you will be able to afford your own place. have a look in trademe.co.nz to get an idea of rent prices. but  just as an idea expect to pay at least $250 a week to rent. food can be expensive but stick to the food you eat at home and it will be ok. Power can be around $80 a month and phone and internet around $30 each. You could probably afford to buy a second hand car.

    3. Second Job for a new zealander no prob not sure if it any different for someone on a work visa however.

Maybe look for jobs at middlemore hospital it probably you closest or even the otara spinal unit takes nurses and probably closer to pakuranga.

My wifes aunty also lives in Pakuranga area and there many filipinos around there. her brother also lives with her and seems rather normal in most filipinno families here. i not seen many go and live on there own.

Enjoy your time in nz i am sure you will. It a big difference to phil in many ways.

    edit

just chatted to a filippino who was wanting to work 2 jobs and  on the visa they said he could only work one main job while on visa, however once you are resident i am sure you can have unlimited jobs

  2. I have a friend who is an EMT in Auckland.  From what he tells me, there's always a nursing shortage.  I can't advise about the rest, but I would imagine that would be a decent salary to start with.

    Good Luck!
