Question:

Nutrition for a newly adopted post partum cat?

I just adopted a cat who had kittens about 2-3 months ago. I don't think she has nursed for a while, but she is a little skinny. She was with the kittens until today, but they are bigger than she is.

Is there anything I can give her to help her gain weight...or will she gain weight on her own?

I suspect that she is very young herself...like she got pregnant in her first heat. She is a tiny girl.

I have regular food and water out for her, but I want to know if there is something else I should give her.

Thanks!

  1. I wouldn't worry too much about fattening her up.  That'll happen in time.  However there is one food that you can use short-term if you really want to put some meat on her bones.

Hills a/d.  Yep, I said it, Hills.  LOL - I despise Hills foods but this particular one is apparently very palatable and can be used in situations like these.  My own vet suggested it for my cat who had gone off her regular food and due to her weight is even more at risk for HL.  She apologized for suggesting it but said that it's ok short-term.

    So that's one option.

Other than that, I would simply plan on feeding her good food for the rest of her life.  You can learn about raw feeding (the ultimate cat food) or choose a grainless canned food.

Dry food is typically unhealthy - or to put it another way, a good canned food is much much healthier.

  2. Please don't feed your cat cheap dry food its high in carbs due to grains and doesn't give him the protein he needs.. Feeding better canned food with less carbs is cheaper in the long run too. He will be healthier and eat less JUNK and p**p less junk all that grain they put in cheap foods does kitties only harm!! Go to a mom and pop pet store, they pay less rent then the big pet stores and so they can be cheaper!! Get some great canned food in the larger cans, cheaper this way too, cover and refrigerate the unused food. AVOID HILLS Science diet brand and other high grain foods.. I will attach a website to review cat foods avoid high carbs.. Keep them under or about 10% carbs is best  go to DIET-RELATED DOCUMENTS area on this site review all the links to cat food info.. http://www.geocities.com/jmpeerson/index... GOOD LUCK!

  3. i am not sure what all the whining about dry food is all about.  my vet says that dry food is no less nutricious for a cat than wet food.  besides that the dry food helps to keep their teeth clean.  you can buy really good dry food as well as moist, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.  ANYWAY.... feed her some dry kitten food, mixed with canned food for extra calories.  also just for a treat and to add a few more calories, give her an egg every once and a while.  i do and my cats LOVE it.  she will eventually gain weight back, and then reduce her calories a little.  that way you dont have to much success and get her too fat.  if you have questions about what kind of dry ar wet food to feed her and how many times per day, the best thing to do is call and talk to a vet.  they are always more than happy to help.  i let my cats eat all day, but mostly they just graze.  they are very heathy though, and they also get alot of exercise.  hope this helps a little.  enjoy your new kitty!
