Question:

Nutrition month activities for children?

the activities should not be contest type. it should be something that everything in the class can do. There was one suggestion of dressing up children as healthy foods and have a food parade but unfortunately the parents make the costumes and then there's no contribution from the child.

the activity should be something that the children will perform on stage.

There are about 30 6-7 year olds in one class.

  2. well, this is a type of competition, but it involves the families

we did a healthy kids week.  each day the kids did a certain exercise and their progress was charted.  how many jumping jacks they could do, how many times they could jump rope, how many squats, how many hula hoops, etc.  you get the picture.  on friday, the parents were invited for a family fun day. they were asked to try to beat their child's individual 'best' in each category.  who ever 'lost' had to go to the cafeteria and prepare a healthy treat for the 'winner'.  of course everyone had a great time.  during the snack time, we had a nutritionist give a chat about healthy eatting, healthy choices and how to integrate them into your daily lifestyle.  each child received a hula hoop and a goody bag with healthy recipes, health related coloring sheets, and a piece of fruit.  your local ymca would be a great source of information for this.

  3. Well, if you wanted to do the food costumes, you could have the kids dress up as foods from the diffeerent groups. They could each tell what food they are, and why they are important to the body. That way they will be learning about healthy foods, as well as having fun and presenting. Then they can have the parade :-)

  4. We did this recently and did the following:

-Planted our own vegetables-we planted in large tubs to grow and care for at preschool such as carrots and also the children potted their own cress in yoghurt pots. Maybe they could put on a 'garden centre' open day where parents come in and help the children. I know its not onstage but it brings in parents.

-We had a challenge chart-parents took home a chart which they filled in with children using stickers or smily faces-the children had 5 challenges everyday...to walk to and from school, to eat 5 portions of fruit and veg, to drink water and milk each day, try something new an to help cook lunch. End of week they bought charts home and we gave them ALL a box of raisons as a prize.-Got GREAT reactions off the parents. (~again sorry its not on stage but thought it was great idea)

-Activity where we talked about what different foods do for the body-eg: milk for teeth and bones, water is like petrol for the body, fruit and veg helps against colds and coughs etc...they enjoyed the talk and we did a body chart where the glued on food on the body. For stage you could make it into a little play or they can pretend they are making a video to explain things to mummy and daddy.

We also had a pretend grocery shop only selling healthy foods, we had roleplay home and a picnic area: Maybe you can make up a play based on something like this---a play about a picnic.

Or is there a book the chidlren like which can be adapted such as 'Handa's Surprise'?
