Nyjer Morgan elects for free agency as Milwaukee Brewers bring Logan Schafer – MLB News
The Milwaukee Brewers and outfielder Nyjer Morgan have reportedly parted ways as the latter elected for free agency on Friday, November 2. With the onset of offseason, this is one of the big decisions that have come to fore in the National League.
Electing free agency, Morgan will be arbitration-eligible now, prompting the Brewers to go for the young Logan Schafer to fill the spot, falling vacant with the departure of Morgan. Nyjer was outrighed to Triple-A Nashville, something that the player chose not to go for.
The news was probably quite likely and less of a surprise for many. Be that as it may, Morgan said he would cherish having been part of the Brewers.
"It is a place that I'll cherish the rest of my life," Morgan said in a text to MLB.com. "Fans, families that embraced the Plush movement in 'the Mill' are the greatest. I thank them and the Brewer organization for giving me a great opportunity."
For the Brewers, nonetheless, it was a time to give opportunity to a new player. It was Logan who won the candidacy for it.
"I know he's going to hook on with somebody," Brewers' general manager Doug Melvin said. "He's still a very good ballplayer and he has the ability to help a team. It's time to give Logan an opportunity, time to take a look at [fellow prospect] Caleb Gindl. We let some young pitchers have that chance [in 2012].”
Appearing in 122 games this season, 289 at-bats, having had .239 average with 3 homers and 16 RBIs to his credit. Making his debut in 2007, he has a career average of .280 with 130 RBIs to his credit in 583 games that he has played.
It was in 2011 that he became a source of strength for the Brewers’ offence, having had .304 average that set him apart. With his departure, though, the Brewers will definitely look to Logan to be the right substitute.
With the moves that the Brewers have been making lately, what remains to be seen is how they actually help build up a solid squad for the upcoming season.
