Question:

Nystagmus and driving?

I'm 15 years old and I can get my permit in about a month. However, I'm worried that I may not be able to pass the vision test. When I read something, or when I write, my nose is about three inches from the paper because that's the best viewing range for me. I can barely read regular street signs until I'm right ontop of them. I have horizontal nystagmus, a condition in which the eyes move back and forth involuntarily. At school, I always have to sit in the front and be in the center, otherwise, I cannot see the board or overhead projector. I do not wear glasses anymore because they make things worse. In school, I would have to take them off to read the board. Will I be able to get a license?

  1. I would recommend talking to your eye doctor. Your eye doctor will know whether or not you can see well enough to pass the vision test. If your eye doctor thinks that you can pass the vision test you can ask your doctor to fill out a form stating what your vision is. As long as you have that form you want have to take the vision test. I always have to request one from my eye doctor every time my license comes up for renewal because my doctor claims that I can see well enough to pass the vision test but I always have trouble reading the eye chart at the DMV.

  2. I would say this will be up to both your doctor as well as with the dmv and in my opinion I would say that you most likely would not be able to get a license.

I have heard of police using Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus Test in a Drunk Driving Cases and the person was arrested so you will have issues.
