The experienced tactician reiterated that the defender will stay at the Stadium of Light despite several clubs looking to sign him.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-Meyler-c10556 has had a hit and miss career at Wearside, failing to crack the starting line-up due to his persistent injury woes.
The full-back is rated highly by the coaches but they haven’t been able to get him performing, as he spends more time on the treatment table than on the pitch.
Martin O’Neill, who took over from Steve Bruce back in December, has now voiced his decision to keep the former Cork City man at the club, although a number of teams have expressed an interest in acquiring his services.
The pack is led by his ex-coach, who is keen to acquire the player on loan and give him a season-long run out before deciding whether to buy him or not.
However Sunderland have made their intentions of keeping the midfielder clear, as O’Neill revealed that he performed admirably in South Korea and showed enough glimpses of his potential to be given a chance.
“There’s loads of people interested in Meyler. But I think he’s got great courage, and he’s a really great kid. I like him a lot, and I can understand why teams want him. But he’s had some serious injuries, and he’s still as brave as ever.”
Meyler also voiced his desire to continue plying his trade at the helm, claiming that he wasn’t interested in signing for any other club.
“I don’t know about any interest in me from any other clubs but that’s not what interests me at the moment anyway. I’m just interested in trying to get to my match fitness for the new season, hoping to show the manager what I can do. I’ve been delighted
to be involved in the trip to South Korea, and hopefully I’ll get more opportunities ahead of the new season,” the 23-year-old said.
Sunderland ended the last campaign on a high after a brilliant start to life under Martin O’Neill. And with the manager having plenty of time in the summer to think things through, the club can look to improve upon their mid-table finish, with Meyler likely
to play a big role in doing that.
