Question:

O-Ring as a cord?

I'm looking for a sealing strip for glass that sits on wood. I was going to rebate a small groove in the wood and use a circular-cross-section rubber cord; like an o-ring, but a long cord.

However I cannot find such a thing.

Does anyone know what this would be called and where I could get it from (UK)?

Or, a better alternative?

Thanks.

  1. Why not use Putty?

  2. How about window screen spline?  It comes in various diameters, and can be found at most hardware stores.

Another option might be flexible tubing... tho it rather depends on the size of your wood, and the size you can make the groove.

Just fyi -- a 'dovetail' shaped groove (or T-slot) will hold the tubing better than a square sided groove.  If you go with a square sided groove, you might want to put a drop of glue here and there to keep the tubing/spline in place.

  3. Would you not use a glazing silicon , it will cure like rubber with a much better seal

  4. you could use the strip that they use for double glazing

    enquire at any d/g firm

  5. If you want a flexible `O ` section have you thought about using a round 3 core flex, neat to cut and the outer casing should be a good grip on the glass. You could use a silicone sealant to fix it in the rebate. The other option,if the glass isn`t taking too much weight, is to use small circular, rubber, clear stick-on pads, which allow the glass to sit on top.they stick to the base, not to the glass. Good luck.
