OAMPS Queensland Blades and WA Thundersticks win in third round of Australian Hockey League
The teams including OAMPS Queensland Blades and WA Thundersticks emerged victorious over OAMPS Southern Hotshots and Darwin Airport Resort Territory respectively, in the third round of the Australian Hockey League (AHL) held on June 14.
In the opening game, OAMPS Queensland Blades edged past OAMPS Southern Hotshots by a single goal, 3-2 and moved into the next round of the league.
Both the squads landed on the field with a mighty spirit. However, it was Queensland that dominated the field throughout the first half.
The offensive strikes from Queensland started the game at a very fast pace and the attacks continued one after the other. Their efforts finally paid off in the 7th minute of the match, when Peter Dillion managed to get the ball at the top of the circle and tapped it into the goal of Southern Hotshots, opening the score at 1-0.
After scoring the opening goal, the players from Queensland boosted up their spirit and further increased their strikes. In the 29th minute of the game, Mathew Swan scored his first goal and second goal of the game to increase the lead up to two goals, 2-0 at the end of the first half of play.
The Hotshots attack came alive in the second half of play, but could only score two goals against the solitary goal of their competitors. Jake Stacy scored a goal to bring his team into the score-net and decreased the lead down to a single goal, 2-1. In the 60th minute of the match, Jason Wilson carried out an attack and regained a two goal lead. With three minutes left onto the clock, Alastair Oliver accounted for a goal, but failed to make an equaliser and lost the game 3-2.
In the second game, WA Thundersticks thrashed Darwin Airport Resort Territory by four goals, 5-1 and improved their ranking in the tournament.
Both Thundersticks and Darwin Airport failed to get a mark in the first half despite having lot of strikes and counter-strikes. However it was Thundersticks that drew the first blood in the 18th minute of the game. Sam Pike, the legendary player from Thundersticks, netted his first goal of the game through the field effort and put his side ahead on the score-board.
The hard and fast game continued and both sides carried out attacks against each other. In the 29th minute of the game, Trent Mitton added a goal from the field and increased the score. Despite attacking several times, Darwin Airport did not succeed until the 35th minute of the game, when Tavis Carroll managed the only goal of the match for his team.
The second half completely belonged to Thundersticks which obtained three more goals in the 35 minutes. Sam Pike chipped in a brace in the score of Thundersticks and expanded the lead of up to three goals. With five minutes remaining on the clock, Fergus Kavanagh accounted for a goal to ride away the field with a great margin and improved their position in the league.
