OAMPS Queensland Scorcher beat Tasmanian Van Demons, 3-2 in AHL: Women Hockey Recap
OAMPS Queensland Scorcher emerged victorious over Tasmanian Van Demons by a single goal, 3-2 in a crucial match of the Women’s Australian Hockey League (AHL) that took place in Darwin, on May 31.
The two teams were at their best and displayed brilliant performances on the field. The players from Tasmanian Van Demons were eyeing for an upset against the Scorchers, but closely missed the triumph. They dominated the field most of the time in both the
halves, but could not maintain their leading status. Madonna Blyth was the real architect of the victory with a couple of goals.
It was an important game for Scorchers, who will play against New South Wales Arrows on Friday, June 3. They will have to win the contest in order to get a berth in finals of the league, scheduled to be held on June 4.
With two minutes in the play, the Van Demons obtained its first short-corner of the game. Amazingly, TAS' Emily Wilson converted the short-corner to put her side ahead on the score-board. In a counter-offence, the strikers from Queensland managed to get
into the defensive circle of Van Demons, but to no avail. Later, Jodie Schulz struck a powerful shot, but unfortunately the ball hit the top of the goal's crossbar and the score remained in the favour of Van Demons.
In the very early minutes of the opening half, Queensland earned three shorts corners, but failed to capitalise any of them.
The strikers from Queensland were consistently attacking the defence-line of Van Demons throughout the first half of play. However, the custodian from Van Demons did not allow them any chances to score. The Van Demons were hanging at the top by a single
goal at the halftime, 1-0.
The two outfits started a more offensive style of play in the second half, as one wanted to level the score while other wanted to hold back the lead. However, Madonna Blyth, the skipper of the national team, scored a goal in the 40thminute to
tie the knots at 1-1. However, the lead could not last for long, as the players from Van Demons converted another short-corner to recapture the lead.
The Queensland’s attacking girls cranked up their offence and took the game into their favour. They managed to score two goals in the 50th and 59th minutes respectively, and take a single goal lead in the game by 3-2.
