OAMPS Queensland Scorchers beat ACT Canberra Strikers, 2-0: Women’s Hockey Recap
OAMPS Queensland Scorchers defeated ACT Canberra Strikers by 2-0 in a Pool B match in Women’s Australian Hockey League (AHL). The victory was expected because being the top ranked team in pool B, Queensland Scorchers were one of the favourites. On the other
side ACT Canberra Strikers were the lowest rated team in the same pool.
However, Queensland Scorchers did not made a convincing victory as the Strikers gave a tough time to them in the field. Sophie Lewis, the Strikers’ goal-keeper was really a class act as she made a number of great saves during the entire course of action.
In the first half, Canberra Strikers displayed some good movements in the defence as well as in the forward-line. Canberra Strikers’ most crucial and vital defender, Anna Flanagan, who is also the part of women’s national hockey team, showed beautiful stick
work and ball control to push the Scorchers back towards their half. However, in the 12th minute Queensland scorchers succeeded to run through Strikers’ defence-line and it was Amy Korner to net a beautiful field goal.
Canberra Strikers also made a number of daring efforts to level the score, but all their efforts went in vain, as they lacked the finishing ability. They also had the opportunity in the shape of a penalty corner, but could not make the full use of it as
they misguided the ball. However, the Queensland Scorchers continuously kept their pressure on Strikers and also the ball of the control. In the first half, for most of the time, the ball remained in the Striker’s half, but they defended well and showed a
lot of resistance. The first half ended at 1-0 to Queensland Scorchers.
The second half was also the replica of first half with only one goal scored by the Scorchers. The Scorchers continued their play with the same strategy and pace, but Canberra Strikers were once again brilliant in their defence. Their goal-keeper, Sophie
Lewis, again was spectacular with a number of fine saves. She did not allow the Scorchers to put the ball into the net.
On the other side Scorchers were making attacks after one another at regular intervals by entering into the circle of Canberra Strikers. It was looking as if the Scorchers would produce another goal and finally it happened.
Just five minutes before the match finished, Scorchers did it once again, but this time it was Renaee Ashton who did not make any mistake in putting the ball in the goal-post of Canberra Strikers. The match ended with a 2-0 win to the OAMPS Queensland Scorchers.
