OAMPS Southern Suns defeat NT Pearls by 5-1 at Women’s Australian Hockey League
OAMPS Southern Suns defeated Northern Territory (NT) Pearls by 5-1 at Darwin, in a game which started very tightly, but finished quite comprehensively. They are in the campaign to make it through to the final of AHL, their first ever since 1995.
Having won the match quite comfortably, OAMPS Southern Suns initially had to fight a very tough battle for the victory against the NT Pearls. Pearls gave a very tough time to Southern Suns, especially in the first half which ended at 2-1 to Southern
Suns.
The match started as expected, Southern Suns taking an early lead in the 6thminute when Catherine Connolly scored the first goal of the match and put her team ahead of the NT Pearls, a splendid field goal. After that Pearls made it very
difficult for the Suns and stooped them from making any penetration in their circle. Pearls also made some wonderful efforts, but the result oriented was in the 26th minute when Tammy Eiser scored the equaliser field goal for the NT
Pearls.
OAMPS Southern Suns continued with the same pace and aggression, but Elizabeth Duguid, NT Pearls' goal-keeper, saved a number of good attempts from Suns. However, the OAMPS Southern Suns did not let their hopes down and their hard-work was rewarded
just moments before the end of first half. In 34thminute of the first half NT Pearls' Samantha Spry made a foul in the circle and the Suns were awarded a penalty stroke. Karri McMahon was faultless in converting the stroke hit into their second
goal and put her team once again ahead of their opponents. The first half ended at 2-1 to Suns.
Second half totally belonged to OAMPS Southern Pearls, as they scored three goals in it. Their third, while the first of the second goal came into play just two minutes after the start of second half when Brooklyn Buchecker scored another field goal
in the 37th minute. The Suns did not stop at all and continued pressing their rivals consistently throughout the second half. In the 47th minute, they did it once again but this time it was a penalty corner goal
by Clarissa McGregor. The fifth and final goal of the match was scored by Bianca Greenshields, five minutes before the match finished.
