OAMPS Southern Suns for the first time ride into the AHL’s finals: Women Hockey Recap
After a hard-hitting game, the crucial contest between OAMPS Southern Suns and Victoria Vipers concluded at a one-all draw that took place in Darwin, on June 03, 2011. In an unmatched move, the OAMPS Southern Suns delivered impressive performances and drew
the game to ride into the finals of the Women’s Australian Hockey League (AHL) for the first time since their debut back in 1995.
It will be a gigantic shock for Victoria Vipers due to their performance in the last week of the league. Despite the fact that they held the top position in the round matches, they could have secured highest fifth place in the overall event. The Victoria
Vipers will face ACT on June 04, in the play-off game for the fifth and sixth places respectively.
The players from Victoria Vipers opened the game quite maturely and carried out back-to-back attacks against Southern Suns. With their fast and furious game, they earned a short corner in the very early minutes of the match. However, they failed to capitalise
the chance. In the later time, they carried out few more attacks, but to no avail.
In a counter-offence, the attackers from Southern Suns cranked up their offence and stormed back against the Victorian Vipers. They obtained their first short corner, but Rachael Lynch–the custodian of the Victoria Vipers made a dive to clear the ball from
the D-Line.
In another strike, the Southern Suns came close to score after Brooklyn Buchecker sent a pass into the crossbars, but the shot went wide.
Owing to hard-hitting game, the efforts of Victoria Vipers bore fruits in the 29th minute of the match when they were awarded another short corner. After missing the shot, Stephanie Riordan made a rebound that sailed perfectly into the cage, opening
the score at 1-0.
However, the lead could not last for long. In a matter of five minutes, the players from Southern Suns carried out a retaliated action and levelled the game. Brooklyn Buchecker converted a short corner in the 34th minute of the match, locking
the horns at one-all.
With a tie-up in the second half, both teams started more disciplined game. However, the Victoria Vipers dominated the field with the ball possession. In the later time, they carried out plenty of attacks but failed to get a go-ahead goal. As the time passed,
the Victorian Vipers are getting more and more desperate, as they knew the draw will be in the favour of opposite team.
After an end-to-end play, the match was completed at 1-1 draw and Southern Suns rode away in the finals of the AHL on the basis of higher score-point.
